May is Older Americans Month

May 1, 2018 @ 12:00 am - May 31, 2018 @ 11:59 pm

May 2018 is Older Americans Month
Engage at Every Age

Older Idahoans are a valued, rapidly growing population. Community Action Partnership/Area Agency on Aging, CAP/AAA, and the Idaho Commission on Aging (ICOA) are working to assist all Idahoans to age successfully. An important part of that is to take part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. The key is to engage at every age.

Many older Idahoans share their wisdom and experience with future generations. They give back in many ways. They work and volunteer. They mentor and teach. They lead through experience and a desire to pass it along. They share their stories that provide important lessons learned, allowing us to benefit from their trials and triumphs. In short, they engage and in doing so enrich our lives.

Remaining physically and socially engaged improves the quality of life for older adults. CAP/AAA and ICOA are using this month to focus specifically on how older adults in our area are engaging with friends and family, and through various community activities.

CAP/AAA offers chronic illness, chronic pain and family caregiver essential skills classes.  Please contact us schedule a class in your local community!

2018 is the 55th year Older Americans Month (OAM) has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

It’s time to engage! Make a phone call. Arrange a visit. Participate in activities. There are so many ways to engage and so many benefits from doing so. Let’s all invest time this month to acknowledge those in our lives who have so much to offer and let them know we appreciate their sacrifices and contributions to making us and our communities what they are today.
